The Naga King Pool Chamber Park (Dragon King Pool Park)
- Description
The Naga King Pool Palace Chamber Park is located in the back of the Potala Hill. The park was designed and layouted flexibly according to the hill's features. Surrounded by irregular polygonal walls, the garden is 610 meters long from east to west. From North to South, one part can be as wide as 303 meters but the other part is only 20.5 meters wide.
The Naga King Pool Palace Garden (Lukhang in Tibetan) is one of the famous garden buildings in Lhasa. There is a large pool in the center of the garden, and it is said that Tsamyang Gyatso once invited Mechuseqin and Parlong from Medro Gongkhar and enshrined them in the north pool, so it is called The Naga King Pool Palace Garden. The The Naga King Pool Palace Garden was initially built during the period of Tsamyang Gyatso, but its water pit has been formed in an earlier time. During the period of Lobsang Gyatso when the Potala White Palace was built and the period of Desi Samgye Gyatso when the Potala Red Palace and monk houses were built, the original water pit was formed after a great amount of soil was removed from the foot of the mountain. The Naga King Chamber is called Lu Kang in Tibetan language. It is also called as Dragon King Pool or Dragon King Pond and it lies behind the Potala Palace Mountain in Lhasa city. In the middle of 17th century, deciple took soil here when rebuilding the Potala Palace, therefore forming a deep pool. Tsangyang Gyatso built a three-storey octagonal glazed pavilion in the center of the lake and frequently came there for a rest. It's called the The Naga King Pool as the Naga King is enshrined in the hall. When the Sakadawa Festival (also called the Day of Releasing Captured Animals) is held every April fifteenth of Tibetan calendar, people come to the Longwangtan Lake for pilgrimage. Then, after refurbishment, it becomes one of the famous Parks of Lhasa.
