Trandruk Temple
- Description
According to the Tibetan history, Trandruk Temple was built by Songtsan Gampo, the Tibetan king in the 7th century. It was reconstructed and extended by Changchup Gyaltsen and Pamochugpa later. It is said that Chinese Princess Wencheng once stayed at the temple to practice and there were relics left. The layout and form of the ground floor of Trandruk Temple’s main hall is similar with that of Jokhang Temple in Lhasa. The temple used to conserve large amount of ancient wall paintings and statues of Songsten Gampo, Princess Wencheng, Nepal Princess Bhrukuti and Minister whose modelling are simple and vivid. During the time of fifth disciple, it was repaired and a golden-top was added. It was also repaired by thirteenth disciple. A bell casted and supervised by monk Ren Qing in the late eighth century was saved in the temple. Twelve sentences of epigraph in Tibetan are engraved on the bells which are divided into inside and outside layers with 6 sentences in each layer and arrayed from left to right. The bell was lost now. The temple has been reconstructed with new ornaments inside.
The Thangkha pearl is the most important treasure of Trandruk Temple, the figure on which is an image of Tara. The whole Thangkha is 2 meters long and 1.2 meters wide, totally used 1.3 kilograms of pearls (summing to 29026 pieces), one diamond, two rubies, one sapphire, 275 grams of purple gem, 455 grams of turquoise (summing to 185 pieces), 205 grams of coral (summing to 1997 pieces) and 15.5 grams of gold.
